Think Green

Enjoying the beauty of our planet is a large part of the pleasure of yachting and protecting this global heritage is important to CNI. As a result, in 2005 we teamed up with The CarbonNeutral Company (TCNC) to make our company carbon neutral. We have measured how much carbon dioxide CNI produces from all its activities and are learning how to avoid emissions and how to set realistic targets and goals to reduce them. There will always be a degree of unavoidable emissions, but by working on a CarbonNeutral programme, we are now offsetting or ‘neutralising’ these emissions. By supporting a number of renewable energy and sustainable forestry projects around the world, we can now help save and absorb the equivalent amount of emissions that CNI produces. To ‘neutralise’ CNI’s CO2 emissions from the last 12 months of operations we selected a forestry project in Scotland and a small hydro project in Bulgaria, both of which are well under way. To offset our emissions for the forthcoming year we have just signed up to a Wind Farm project in New Zealand.
CNI can make your next charter a little ’greener’ by measuring and ‘neutralising’ the CO2 associated with the fuel burned by any yacht. If you would like to join us in the CarbonNeutral Programme, please contact your CNI broker.

Superyacht Cuisine

Courtney Freeman of YACHTING magazine sampled the delights of cuisine, on a CNI charter 'taster', aboard the 158-foot KANALOA, whose chef Barry Orr has a dozen years experience.

"After Orr's meal, I adjusted my standards upwards in terms of what I consider exceptional food.

Our first course was Kumera soup, freshly smoked using Manuka wood flown in from New Zealand. The dish had one goal: expression of clarity and bold flavor. Mission accomplished.

Pan-fried grouper on a square of oven-roasted pasta sounds simple, but Orr intertwines its clean flavor with a bed of pomme puree that incorporates hand-crushed ginger and lemon. The dish is finished with lemon-infused olive oil and balsamic reduction. The gentle flavors of grouper and the slightly brash vitality of the pomme puree take turns on the palate, but no single element shouts. Rather, they work together in an unexpected, artful arrangement of taste.

Speaking of artful, the dessert did not dissappoint. Chocolate mousse was bound between circles of moist chocolate sponge, accompanied by creme anglaise and a petite quenelle of vanilla ice cream. All of the above was imprisoned by a spun sugar cage. Its rich, but very clean flavor was the perfect finish to the meal.

Presentation does not end with the food, but continues with the layout and amenities of the yacht herself..."

Design for Charter Appeal

Marilyn Mower writes in ShowBoats International:

According to Camper & Nicholsons charter brokers Barbara Dawson and Pierre Hurel, the overall profile of a yacht is a factor in the selection process.

"The single most important aspect for a charter yacht is its exterior lines," says Hurel a 17-year veteran on CNI's Monaco office. "Beautiful lines sell, ugly ones do not." Dawson adds that American clients particularly seem to like sleek-looking yachts.

Download the feature to the right or order a copy of the real thing from ShowBoats before you decide on which boat to charter.

Corporate Entertainment

Business or pleasure?

It's a hard question to answer when heading off to join a yacht on the Cote d'Azur or in the Bahamas for a business meeting.

Ask our brokers for references such as:

"We had an idea of the impact we needed to make on our clients, but CNI took this beyond the realms of our imagination and created a truly exceptional evening".

Whether during the Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival or the Newport Jazz Festival, CNI's charter advisors know how to secure you the best berth, provide on board entertainment or even recommend a quiet bay to anchor in, away from the office environment, until you have the signature you are after on your business contract...

Communications on board allow for lawyers, advisors, agents, the office etc to be on hand as if next door. Many yachts have on-board offices adjacent to the master suite or full conference facilities. If the going gets tough, there's always the Jacuzzi.

A Day in the Life of...

It’s noon on a Tuesday, or perhaps it’s a Wednesday. For crew, the day of the week is unimportant. A yachting calendar is geared around the guests. Today my primary concern as chief stewardess on Excellence III is that the Smith’s charter begins tomorrow at lunchtime. It is their first charter. I and the three other stewardesses on board are donning the finishing touches on the interior and making sure that nothing is forgotten. The provisions are stocked, the flowers are arranged in place, the boat is immaculate, the sheets are pressed, magazines and books abound, and the champagne is chilling.

First time guests are, to begin, only a name. Take the Smith’s, for example. The group starts to take form through phone conversations and information from the charter broker. A preference sheet, filled out by the charter guests, gives us some insight as to the food and drink preferences as well as the kind of activities the group enjoys. But even with these guidelines, a charter crew is prepared for the unexpected. Once the guests arrive it all could change. After all, it is their holiday! The fun of chartering a boat is the flexibility it allows. The interior staff is flexible as well. It is my job to get a sense of the mood on board and cater to it. Is it appropriate to prepare exotic frozen concoctions, champagne cocktails, or to serve sparkling waters with lime? Would the guests prefer a three course lunch aboard or a picnic on the beach?

What makes a charter holiday different from other holidays is the personal touch it allows. As we get to know each individual guest, we can anticipate their desires. A yacht provides a private setting which can be personalised unlike any five star hotel. We are aware that Mr Smith takes his coffee with cream. Mrs Smith prefers tulips in her cabin and Aveda skin cream, so I see to it that she has both. A charter yacht has the same amenities as a grand hotel. This includes elaborate table settings, spectacular flower arrangements, fine table services, laundry daily, a full bar with a capable bar tender, turn down in the evening, fresh sheets, and so on. The stewardesses see to all of these areas. It is our pleasure to get to know each group of guests and tailor our work to equal their vision of a perfect trip. It is our goal to surpass that vision by paying attention to the smallest of details. The moment our guests step aboard, every effort is made to make them feel at home. No request goes unheard, and no desire is left unanswered.

So for now the Smith’s are merely a loose idea. The moment they step aboard, a voice on the phone and a preference list take shape in each individual guest. We know the wine cellar is stocked with the wines they prefer and that we have the newest movies in our library. It is now our job to greet our guests and help them mould each day to create the ultimate trip. A yacht charter is personal and private, where guests become more than a room number attached to a name. The guests and the trip are distinctive as well as memorable. Hopefully next year they will return, to a now familiar setting where the crew remembers not only your name, but how you take your coffee.

Tish Owen, Head Stewardess on EXCELLENCE III

Jaguar - skipper's diary

Claudia Verkerk, aboard the CNI charter yacht Jaguar, reports in Motor Boat & Yachting.

Jaguar cruises Croatia in the summer and is run by her husband and wife owners, Jan & Claudia.

"Jan & I are always on board, because this life is too beautiful for us to want to miss a moment. The lure of the blue water, with its dolphins and even whales that pass beneath our bow is impossible to resist. At the beginning and end of every season we anchor off Juan les Pins and have come to consider this little bay our home. When we have no guests I always invite the crew for a cappuccino on the beach. It's a sort of tradition - a celebration of this life. It might be that, because I really don't like cappuccino very much!"

CNI’s VIP treatment

CNI hosted a couple of fun events during the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, including the annual Captain’s Dinner, held once again at Chima on Las Olas Blvd, in association with Bank of America. Global Marine Travel (GMT) graciously donated an air ticket for a raffle that was won by Captain Andre Peens of Princess Mariana. CNI’s Crewed Affair crew party, now in its third year, was held on the Friday preceding the show. This year CNI partnered with Dockwalk magazine and GMT in hosting what has become a really fun pre-show party. Over 400 crew, captains and friends attended.

This year CNI brought a Carbon Neutral dimension to its participation with a fleet of hybrid cars to chauffeur clients around the show. The distinctive green pennants could be seen from quite some distance, which was useful considering the inordinate amount of traffic.

Those who came to CNI’s VIP outdoor lounge were ushered into the indoor café due to the weather. The food was superb and ensured that a crowd of guests (and CNI staff) packed it every day of the show. On the opening day CNI was pleased to assist Yacht Accent, the yacht furnishings company, in hosting a small private reception to meet the designer Giovanna Locatelli.

FT How to Spend It

FT’s How to Spend It journalist, Adam Edwards, takes a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek look at the world of superyacht charter.

Camper & Nicholsons is, of course, the name that comes to mind when one talks of luxury yachting and gets an exclusive mention.

'If you have to ask how much then you can’t afford it' is the old saying – and for some that might even include whether you can afford being a guest. But then, tipping the crew is entirely discretionery…

THE BUSINESS

When you have a winning formula, the general consensus is not to change it… but who ever said anything about not extending it? Superyacht charter first emerged in the middle of the last century, and in the last few decades of the 20th century it really came into its own. It is not hard to see why. Not only does it promise luxury beyond comparison, it is also exciting – your own private travelling resort delivering you to the world’s most compelling destinations. But above all, a superyacht affords its guests an extreme level of security and privacy – a means to escape media attention, the masses and the complexities of everyday life. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that following the success of private charters, the formula was expanded to the corporate world.

Incentive charters

Corporations are also tapping into the yacht charter market as a way to retain devoted, talented employees and keep them motivated and inspired. The crew can organise watersports activities and excursions ashore, or the charter broker can arrange for professional team-building seminars and challenges, such as learning to sail on board a fleet of yachts. There are endless options.

Aside from the remarkable activities available on a corporate charter, the destinations alone are a peerless incentive or reward. Charters can take place in the world’s most beautiful destinations, such as the remote Virgin islands, in the most dynamic cities, such as the trendy, business centre of Cannes, or can tie in with world-famous events, such as the Monaco Grand Prix.

For corporate entertainment occasions, or simply if larger groups of guests wish to charter a yacht, Camper & Nicholsons International can supply a fleet of yachts to cruise in tandem, or provide a single megayacht with accommodation for up to 80 guests. The following yachts are just a sample of the many available.

The corporate fleet

In an age where business is an integral part of life for so many, luxurious megayachts the likes of the 85.3 metre Alysia, or the 116.5 metre Turama, are increasingly chartered by corporations, high-profile personalities, and large family groups. The controlled environment that they can provide is a key selling point for security and privacy reasons, as well as the highly efficient, discreet and inspired working environment they offer. Equipped with all the latest technology and communications, the new breed of megayacht offers facilities for both conferences and private work. First-class accommodation and a full range of leisure facilities are on hand to refresh employees at the end of a busy day, and most yachts now include spas and gymnasiums. Full-time professional crews (including gourmet chefs, nurses, massage and beauty therapists) are also on hand to take care of every need. It is not unusual for members of the crew to take training in defence skills, or for the traditional nanny’s cabin adjacent to the owner’s suite to be occupied by a bodyguard. Thus high-profile celebrities and statesmen, for example, can travel in comfort and safety with their entire entourage – whether for business or pleasure.

CHARTER MANAGEMENT SERVICES

The role of a charter manager is manifold and, as the owner of any successfully managed yacht will confirm, invaluable. Charter managers have expertise in every aspect of charter management and take a very personal approach to each and every yacht on their books. It’s not unrealistic to say that they know each yacht inside out and are always in close contact with the owner, crew and captain – forging the all-important link between them. They also know the superyacht industry like the back of their hand – useful if your yacht runs into fuel problems somewhere off Tortola, or if your captain needs a guiding word on the latest amendments to the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) at the drop of a hat.
CNI's Monaco and Fort Lauderdale-based Charter Management Divisions continue to provide essential support to the owners of charter yachts worldwide.

Our CMD is exceptionally well placed to promote charter yachts as it has invaluable experience in this sector of the industry, and also works hand in hand with the other CNI divisions to offer a comprehensive service to clients. This service includes charter fleet marketing and advertising, contract management, handling enquiries and bookings and promoting the charter fleet to ultimate effect.

Two offices turned to one

The two CNI Fort Lauderdale offices at 17th street and Bahia Mar are turning into one office only, at 651 Seabreeze Boulevard 33316 Fort Lauderdale, just a stone’s throw away from our previous office.

The office at 17th street used to house the Yacht Management and Crew Placement divisions, developed after CNI took over BSA in 2002, while Sales Brokerage, Charter and Charter Mamagement were at Bahia Mar.

A renovated two-storey building painted Key West style, the new office brings all the existing Fort Lauderdale services under one roof, with easy access and plenty of parking space for visitors! Yacht Management and Crew Placement occupy the first storey, while services previously located at the Bahia Mar are now on the second floor.

Think Green

CNI continues to lead the way within the yacht brokerage industry with regards to sustainable development. In 2005 CNI teamed up with The CarbonNeutral Company, committing not only to offset its existing carbon emissions but also to improve its work practices. Over the last two years CNI’s offices have implemented specific recycling and reducing programmes into their daily activities. There will always be a degree of unavoidable emissions, but by working on a CarbonNeutral programme, CNI is now offsetting or ‘neutralising’ these emissions by supporting a number of renewable energy and sustainable forestry projects around the world, helping to save and absorb the equivalent amount of emissions that CNI produces.
